THE TRANSITION OF THE NORTH EAST MONSOON

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) predicts that four to six episodes of continuous rain will occur from November to March next year following the transition of the North East Monsoon (MTL).

Its Director General, Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said, the long-term weather forecast for this September to February 2023 is based on the consensus of meteorologists through the analysis of several selected international climate forecast models.

He said, most international climate models show that the atmospheric cycle in the tropics is currently consistent with the El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) condition which is expected to continue until this December with a 60 percent probability.

"The latest survey shows that the weather during the Southwest Monsoon transition at the end of September and the MTL that starts in early November and ends in March next year is normal with most areas receiving normal rainfall.

"During the MTL period, four to six episodes of continuous rain are expected to occur, causing the weather to be wetter than other seasons.

"Typically, the weather is predicted to rain in the morning in the east of the Peninsula, west of Sarawak and east of Sabah while in the afternoon, thunderstorms or rain will occur in the states on the west coast of the Peninsula, the interior of Sarawak and west of Sabah," he said.

He said, throughout the MTL period the country will also receive consistent winds from the northeast between 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

"Several series of comprehensive heavy rains are also expected to occur for a few days, especially in the eastern coastal states of the peninsula, western Sarawak and eastern Sabah.

"Therefore, we advise the public to always be aware of the surrounding conditions and plan daily activities to avoid unwanted things from happening," he said.

He said the latest weather information can be found on the MetMalaysia website, official social media and the myCuaca application.
