SERDANG, 20 Disember 2024 – The Secretariat of Green Sustainability and Food Security, Tan Sri Mustaffa Babjee College (KMB), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has organised the Green Initiative: Trash to Treasure 1.0 programme at the Store next to the Laundry Block D, KMB. The program lasted for two days, on 19 and 20 December 2024 with the participation of 539 KMB college students and one UPM student as well as support from the College Management and the Student Union. The participation was divided into 513 participants and 27 members of the executive committee.
This programme provides opportunities for students to engage in green practice activities and become pioneers of a greener future. The program also aims to foster a spirit of recycling in students while contributing to the economy, hygiene and environmental well-being.
Programme director, second-year Bachelor of Dietetic Science with Honours, Ahmad Haziq Luqman bin Halim said. "Green Initiative: Trash to Treasure 1.0 can have a high impact on environmental sustainability through recycling activities. In addition, this program can also foster noble values in students and increase the spirit of cooperation between students".
On the first day, this program was conducted for students of blocks A and B, KMB and UPM students. This program received a high response from other college in UPM and KMB college students on the first day with the participation of 242 KMB students. The recyclables will be placed into the store for future disposal.

On the second day, the programme was conducted for students of blocks C and D, KMB and UPM students. This program received a response of 270 KMB students and one UPM student. Most of the participants who attended this program brought recyclables such as mineral water bottles, boxes, paper and so on.

Meanwhile, several participants also voiced positive views on the recycling programme. "This programme allows us to utilise unused items to be used as recyclables. In addition, we were also able to clean and brighten up our college area after attending the program," said Aiman, one of the participants of Green Initiative: Trash to Treasure 1.0.

It is hoped that through this program, awareness of recycling practices can be fostered in students as well as forming students who love the environment. The programme also hopes to increase awareness of the environment, community cleanliness and collaboration between teams. Hopefully, this programme can be the starting point for the existence of other initiatives to foster recycling practices among students who can contribute to the well-being of UPM.
